Well, I was at the point of reaching the surface when the Steam Bug got me. It forced me to reload the entire game, which lost all my previous saves. This means starting over - which is normally fine.

Except, now I can't recall how I got the first force fields to come down once you descend in the first elevator. What tip did I miss?

You'll have to be more specific about the chapter and the location where you are stuck. Forcefields and elevators abound in M:M.

This is the first descent section, with the "suspicious" dead headcrab in the elevator. There is a box of grenades in the lowest level. There is a staircase you must climb to reach the force field. There are two sets of sentry guns that have to be brought down.

The question is - how to take down the force fields? There is no plug to pull.

The forcefields in this area cannot be disabled from where you are. Find a console in the vicinity of the turrets and push the button. Minerva will tell you what to do next.
