I downloaded the latest version of Metastasis from

http://www.hylobatidae.org/minerva/filegoatmatic.php?filename=metastasis_patched.exe

twice. File size is 155,551,931 bytes. When I try to execute the file, it opens a DOS box window for a short moment, and fails to run the installer. When I run the exe from the DOS prompt I get this error:

I:\temp>metastasis_patched.exe
Program too big to fit in memory

What is going on here? I checked the FAQ step-by-step, I have HL2 and EP1, both work, the SourceMods folder is clean etc...

I played an earlier version of the Mod (about a year or so ago)... and back then it worked.

Hope someone can help here.

BTW: I am running Windows XP Pro, SP1, with 2 GB Ram.

Thanx.

AEon

Redownload the file. The error is quite often caused by a corrupt file.
Other checks:
- Check your Windows Installer version and update it if necessary.
- Look for processes hogging up your RAM.

locworks,
thank you for the quick reply.

I installed the latest installer, rebooted and tried again. Same error persists. After rebooting I have 1.5 GB of free Memory so that certainly cannot be the problem.

I can only assume the download link file is messed up in some way.

I will try the bittorrent link... maybe that helps. :(

Sounds like a corrupted download - there are some more reasons for the error here. Essentially, if the first couple of bytes of an .EXE are mangled, Windows usually mis-identifies it as an ancient, MS-DOS non-relocatable executable. And surprisingly, 150MB is a Bit Big for one of those...

You're the first to report this problem, so I don't think there's a rogue mirror out there - using some different software to re-download MINERVA may help!

    metastasis.exe: 155,551,652 bytes.
    metastasis_patched.exe: 155,551,654 bytes.

Well the download via Bittorrent worked:
    metastasis_patched.exe: 155,551,654 bytes.

So indeed you are totally right. Something mangled a few bytes in the download. Strange I use Proxomitron as proxy and the latest Firefox. I never had problems downloading files. And I downloaded it twice.

Maybe the mirror only recently has a "problem"? If not, you are right, must be something really weird on my side.

Anyway thank you to everyone for helping out...

Metastatis in 1680x1050 on my new TFT (HP w2207) should really look awesome :)
