Ok, so I am in Minerva chapter 3.
I threw the barrels into the plasma hole to disengage the force field and get a plasma gun and some granades.
Now what?
I can't seem to exit this area or find anything to interact with.

Follow Minerva's advice and shut down the portal.. Unplug that thing in the middle of the room you got the pulse rifle in.

Often found in Half Life games and MINERVA when you need to shut somethnig down or turn it on - if you can't progress immediately, there'll be a power cable strung from a button or such leading to the solution.

In Episode 1, there's a cable strung between the lift and the fuse box. Through out HL2 there are cables from force-fields to power sockets. And here in this example there is a cable from the button to a power socket.

Here's a tip: you're not supposed to get rid of the forcefield. Try looking for places to throw grenades that are, say, closer to the caged walkway further up that corridor?

I seem to be stuck while trying to find my way out of the shaft after your suit has rebooted. I made my way to the elevator which only went so far before getting stuck. I crossed the makeshift bridge and subsequently found a long ladder leading up and then another ladder going further up into a small room that seems to have no exit other than back where I came from. I would prefer a hint that lies somewhere between gentle and big fat spoilery leaning toward the gentle side for now.
