MINERVA - read-only archives

Ok, so until recently all I knew of the Halo backstory was from playing through the games. From that it's nothing particularly out of the ordinary 'spaceships, aliens, big guns, end of the world etc.', mind you, it's obvious it's been put together well.

The other day I just read the fabled letters for the first time (along with a quick overview of the marathon backstory) and, woa!

For starters I'm now seeing why people have said that Minerva owes more to Halo than HL2.
But mainly it made me think, up until now I'd assumed that Halo was basically about the Master Chief, but those letters make it look as if it's really all about Cortana, she's up to something, or after something. Much as our Minerva is using the player for her(?) own ends.
And I'm sure I spotted somewhere in the Halo/Marathon backstory something about and artifact in a big hole in the ground, which if you've seen the Halo3 trailer is kinda familier, will Cortana make her move for deification in H3?
