From what I gathered, neither the combine world, nor Xen.

I think we don't know much about it other than it conceals abandoned, eschatological secrets far beyond even Minerva's reckoning.

I think we may sort-of find out in Chronoclasm. (Or "Out Of Time", Adam mentioned in the chatroom that this name would appear after 'Metastasis' in Steam.)

So, did the new release shake your faith in Minerva's omniscience?

It was interesting to see that Adam fleshed it out well enough that you could see Antlions running around there if you look closely. Another question that begs to be asked, is what exactly is it the Combine were doing there?

The answer to your question is "yes", but still that is not the reason I posted the underlined part. It's because she says so herself.

The Combine have conquered and stripped-bare dozens of other worlds - I think it's most likely that the world beyond the portal is one of these.

My take, for the moment at least, on the Terra Incognita that lies beyond the Portal, is that it is the ruined planet of an ancient civilisation, that attained knowledge and technology far beyond any other known, before destroying itself in some cataclysmic war.

Such hyper-advanced civilisations, that despite obtaining vast knowledge, come to destroy themselves, are a staple of Science Fiction.

Note Adam's use of an image of Ganymede, to represent a ruined mystery planet.

Note Minerva's reference to the planet:

Quote:
" ... it conceals abandoned, eschatological secrets far beyond even my reckoning."

Minerva is desperate to prevent the Combine getting their hands on whatever deadly technology may survive there ( "eschatological secrets"), and it may be the source of Minerva's power also:

Quote:
" ... I know that place... "

Minerva certainly did seem rather less in control, and at least momentarily, needy and even afraid:

Quote:
" ... Don't die on me now, please. I need you... "

Quote:
" ... I know they can reach me now, and that makes me afraid."

Her language actually became quite coarse as She became stressed!!

I don't think Minerva knew that there was a portal leading to that particular world. I think it came to her as a shock, a sudden realisation, if you will. In her words:

Quote:
Aww, fuck. I didn't expect this, I really didn't.

I know that place, and it is IMPERATIVE that you close this portal
and disable all related hardware AS SOON AS INHUMANLY POSSIBLE.

Don't die on me now, please. I need you...

Excellent find there about Ganymede Baffled. I checked it out and you're right, that is exactly a picture of Ganymede. (You say it as if that was obvious?) Of course I think we're all assuming that the 2D and 3D holographic images we see (of Ganymede) are supposed to be the world on the other side of the portal. If so, I hope you're right that Ganymede is just a placeholder image, not meant to say that the portal actually goes to a moon of Jupiter.

Anyhow, perhaps that world could be Earth in the future? Then the portal would just be a time portal, explaining the "differences" in :
Quote:
The RF emissions and particle backscatter detected by your suit are
now near-identical to those found in the interior of one of our dear
benefactors' Citadels. Except with crucial, subtle ... differences.

There have obviously also been other references to time travel or some-such noted before. Also, eschatology, from what I read, is about the end of humanity, or the end of the world, which fits nicely.

Or of course it could be an alien world.

Interesting- I come here to discuss my theories regarding said portal, and not only do I find an in-depth discussion already in progress, but both of the theories I support have already been mentioned. Those are, of course, the ultra-technological race that wound up being undone by their own technology, and the time-portal idea.

I personally subscribe to the time portal theory - it just seems to work. One, we know Antlions came from Xen. There are Antlions there, but that place is obviously not Xen. If you're like me, and decided to noclip to that place (just go straight down), you likely noticed some markedly Combine architecture, but also a human-stile I-beam type material. Oh, and sand - lots and lots of sand. So, what place has Antlions, human- and combine-esque construction, and the potential for mass desertification. Earth, of course. Think about it - we beat the Combine at some point in the future, reverse engineer Combine technology, and, given our volatile human natures, we blow ourselves to pieces.

There is, of course, more evidence for this. Near the beginning of M3, you see a hologram of Earth. Later, near the portal, you see a hologram of the other planet. Perhaps some kind of now-and-then comparison? The title Chronoclasm / Out of Time also lends itself to time-travel dynamics. Then we take into account Ace's post, and we have a very well laid out theory of the world beyond that portal, and pretty much no evidence against it. Unless, of course, I missed something.

As convincing as these arguments are, may I play the Devil's advocate? In Combine controlled Earth, vast tracts of the ocean are dried up - deserts, littered with ship wrecks and great animal carcasses. Just think of the concept art from Raising the Bar for the Wastelands, and of the brief trip there in HL2's malfunctioning teleport.

Well, if it's not a Combine world or Xen, it must be someplace else.

Anyone here who's played that mod and cares to comment? All I've got to go on is the title.

I originally thought it was that northern area we glimpsed Dr. Mossman in during Episode One (small spoiler), but now that I read these, obviously up north there's no sand. I think it's got to be someplace... else.

In jokes aside, I doubt it's an alien world, it looks like somewhere on Earth. Perhaps Chronoclasm will elaborate?
