"Certain Anti-Virus applications such as AVG 7.5, Nod32 and Norton have been confirmed to cause instability with Steam and Source Engine games. This software must be fully uninstalled from your system until the Anti-Virus software developers can resolve these issues. If you are not comfortable with using alternative Anti-Virus protection, then we recommend contacting your Anti-Virus developer for more information."
And Kapersky has firewall issues with upgrading steam...
Finally, What antivirus is 100% useful, harmless and trusted? Friendly with Steam/hl2.exe? I have used the 4 mentioned above...

Never had an issue with AVG myself, what's supposed to be the problem?

It causes the infamous crashes with sound looping. It's actually an issue with the way Windows handles paged kernel memory, and having antivirus software resident seems to mean it runs out. The suggested fix I've seen (other than uninstalling AVG) is to increase the size of the PagedPool: - I've increased my pagedpool to the maximum size and it made my crashes go away, even with AVG still running.
Unfortunately, because of the way antivirus software has to be kept resident, it's unlikely that there's going to be an easy fix for the antivirus software authors, short of trying to reduce their memory footprint.

Couldn't you just close out the Anti-virus program while running a Steam Game? It does remove the protection of a scan-on-execute anti-virus, but would free up the memory wouldn't it?
